Carbon Passport Programme
Climate change is now internationally recognised as the single greatest challenge facing the Earth. At International Air Charter we are also aware of the impact of Carbon Emissions from Air Travel and we recognise that many of our clients are too. Our Carbon Passport Programme is our response to that threat. Since we can't stop flying we must do something to balance the impact we have and we give this option to anyone that flys with us.
After many years of being treated as a marginal issue most people now recognise that climate change is a real phenomenon, that the impact of carbon emissions is already being felt and that drastic action to curb carbon emissions is required to prevent irreversible and catastrophic damage to our environment and ecosystems.
Carbon Offsetting
Our responsibility starts with measuring our harmful emissions, or carbon footprint. There's lots of advice available on how to reduce your footprint but inevitably there's always some emissions left. “Carbon offsetting” balances your harmful emissions by funding a project which guarantees the equivalent reduction in emissions somewhere else. Because emissions are dispersed throughout the atmosphere, this effectively neutralises your carbon footprint.
Carbon Offsetting and Private Aviation
Users of private aviation are generally only too aware that their decision to use private aviation is a trade off between the benefits associated with independent travel and the relatively high impact on the environment compared to flying in commercial aircraft. We believe the type of individual who uses private aviation, whether for personal or business use, increasingly will seek to offset the impact of their travel, furthermore there is growing external pressure for operators and users of private jets to be more environmentally responsible.
Our partner company, Carbon Passport, use high quality Carbon Offsets called Certified Emission Reductions (CERs). One CER represents one tonne of CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent).
CERs are financial credits which are issued to projects which reduce the emissions of CO2 or other greenhouse gases, such as methane. Examples include wind farms, energy efficiency projects and electricity generation from landfill gas.
CERs are only issued to projects approved under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of the Kyoto Treaty. These projects are subjected to rigorous qualification procedures and ongoing monitoring, supervised by the UN’s CDM Executive. CERs are only awarded to projects that would not have taken place without the additional revenue from CERs.
